Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV
The luxury
brand has not skipped any corners, still providing the most luxurious ride and
comfort imaginable. Like the EQS electric hatchback that arrived last year, the
EQS SUV is a flagship that doesn’t make any excuses. With 305 miles of range,
seating for up to seven, and a stately cabin that looks and feels every bit the
luxury role (and price), the EQS SUV is the proper way to launch the electric
side of the brand to Americans. All EQS SUVs include an air suspension and
rear-axle steering, and the resulting maneuverability and verve may have you a
bit in disbelief that you’re in a three-row, 6,200-plus-pound SUV—one with some
level of off-road ability.
Maserati Grecale
Maserati
is known within the automotive industry for its ever-inventive design and
quality craftsmanship. So far, it appears the 2023 Grecale's legacy will be
that of a stellar midsize SUV that lived up fully to those lofty standards.
Available in GT, Modena, and Trofeo trim levels, the base Grecale will be
propelled by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 paired with a mild-hybrid system
with a belt starter generator and an e-Booster to provide a respectable 296
horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Although it wears an SUV body, Maserati's
new Grecale Trofeo is an Italian exotic in nearly every other respect, and if
the visuals don't make that obvious, firing up and revving the 523-hp
MC20-sourced engine sure as hell will. From the lipstick-red interior to the
screaming turbo engine, no other contender in our SUV of the Year competition
waved the flag for its country of origin like the Maserati. And yes, the
driving experience is every bit as electrifying as the visuals promise.
Kia Niro
The Kia
Niro has been reimagined for a new generation of drivers with plenty of tech,
more interior space, and versatility than ever before, and an upscale cabin
that delivers a unique, multifaceted luxury experience. Inspired by the
HabaNiro concept, the second-generation Kia Niro will be powered by a hybrid
powertrain that consists of a 1.6-liter four-cylinder and a 32-kW electric
motor, making 139 combined horsepower and 195 lb-ft of combined torque. The
2023 Niro will also feature a plug-in hybrid setup that includes the same
engine as the hybrid model, an 11.1-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, and a 62-kW
electric motor for a combined 180 horsepower. A six-speed dual-clutch automatic
transmission will be used in both vehicles. Kia Niro will also be available as
an all-electric model with an estimated range of 253 miles.
Ford F-150 Lightning
As the
number one selling vehicle over the last one hundred years, this year is no
different with this iconic truck. With the same frame, made stouter to support
the battery pack without sacrificing payload, and an independent rear
suspension, the Lightning performs and rides better than the gas version in
most respects—except towing, of course. At up to 320 miles from its 131-kwh
extended range pack, it’s not efficient by EV standards, but versus gasoline
trucks it arguably makes a bigger impact. Ford also, bravely, is the first
automaker to offer a warranty-supported Home Integration system that, with a
smart charger and disconnect switch, will allow owners to use the Lightning as
backup home power and with solar.
Ford Mustang (S650)
The ford
mustang has always been a top pick for the muscle car enthusiast. This time is
no different. Ford has taken the mustang to a new level of enjoyment. While a
new version of the world’s best-selling sports car is already exciting on its
own, the all-new Ford Mustang Dark Horse model promises to be the most
powerful, track-oriented car to ever carry a 5.0-liter V-8 under the hood with
a targeted output of 500 hp.
Chevrolet Corvette Z06
The new
2023 Corvette Z06 is a sports car like no other. A shining example that
rewrites the rulebook and elevates Chevrolet to a league of exotic cars and
supercars manufacturers like Ferrari and Lamborghini. All those well-worn
phrases like “America’s supercar” and “the performance machine that’s also a
daily driver” can’t help but spring to mind because that’s exactly what the
Chevrolet Corvette is. It’s a joy, a thrill, an experience to be savored,
treasured, relished, and repeated. It all starts with the 6.2-liter V8
propelling a lightweight (it’s predominantly a composite body on a metal frame)
2-seater car with 490 horsepower. By placing the engine just behind those seats
and fitting a well-tuned suspension, the 2023 Corvette has the poise and
reactions of the finest mid-engine supercars.
Cadillac Lyriq
You cannot
go wrong with a Cadillac and this year is no different. Although, initially
offered in single-motor rear-wheel-drive form, it’s the version with the best
efficiency and an EPA range of up to 312 miles. We find its exterior compelling
and fresh, from the rakish, sport-wagon silhouette to the wraparound tail,
while the charming design of the five-seat interior and new switchgear take
things in a new, cleaner direction. It seems to have many of the right
ingredients, from arguably stunning styling (inside and out) to
up-to-the-minute technology and infotainment, plenty of convenience and safety
features, plus a next-generation approach to battery construction.
BMW XM
BMW
vehicles have never been pushovers, but the all-new XM, with its exceptionally
futuristic, sharply defined lines and bold character, is a robust-looking SUV
designed to be so much more: the most powerful production BMW ever. Under the
hood, a punchy 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 mated to an electric motor and a battery
pack will be offered with 644 horsepower and an estimated 30 miles of
electric-only driving range. In addition, the XM will utilize a coil-spring
suspension system with adaptive dampers and active anti-roll bars to help
control body roll during tight cornering situations.
Alpha Romeo Tonale
The
all-new 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale is gunning for the big-name small luxury SUVs.
The first Alfa Romeo vehicle to feature an available plug-in hybrid (PHEV)
powertrain, the Tonale is marketed as a cheap and practical premium sport
utility vehicle with a standard all-wheel drive. It offers a standard
turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four generating 256 horsepower and 295 pound-feet
of torque. The optional plug-in hybrid setup marries a 1.3-liter turbocharged
four-cylinder engine with a rear-mounted electric motor for a combined 272 hp.
The base powertrain links to a nine-speed automatic transmission, while the
plug-in hybrid trim has a six-speed automatic and a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion
battery pack that's good for around 30 miles of electric-only driving range.

Acura Integra Type S
Though
that car is designed to be the epitome of Honda on-track performance, Acura
says the Integra Type S will be the ultimate on-road enthusiast vehicle. The
Integra Type S handles high speeds with quiet stability. The standard Integra's
upscale cabin is still mature and refined here, with slight tweaks to the seats
to convey a sense of performance. The six-speed shifter and Type S gauge
graphics suggest speed, but if you're not looking for them, the cabin looks
positively upmarket in a way that the bold, red-carpeted Civic can't match.
